As long as the possibility for a keyboard shortcut remains,
I'd say the 'right-click' can be used for other tasks.

Shift+left-click or Ctrl+left-click seem to be a good(*) choice
for grouping anyway, since grouping is similar to multiple
selection of list items in other GUIs which is also often
triggered by these modifiers.

*) if I may abbreviate 'like many people know it from other
   programs' as 'good'
