Before I fixed this, tkrat was pretty much unusable on my larger folders
(20 - 60k messages).  I'm hoping to do a similar speedup for the
threaded sort.  There are some more possible optimizations that will
make performance even better.

I'd also like to see if I can trim the memory consumption, though this
is less of an issue for me now that I've configured my primary machines
with sufficient RAM and swap.
